Where's Bret?

It's not quite "Where's Waldo," but if you're looking for occasional Poison frontman Bret Michaels, you'll find him hosting the "2010 Miss Universe Pageant" tonight. The live broadcast from Las Vegas on NBC pairs Bret with his "Celebrity Apprentice" mentor Donald Trump, who bought the beauty pageant in the mid-Nineties.

Those Busy Busy U2 Boys

Wow! Recovering from serious spinal surgery only briefly slowed Bono down. Since U2 started the new leg of their "360° Tour" on August 6th, they've already been playing three new songs every night! They're now opening with an instrumental called "Return Of The Stingray Guitar." In describing the new acoustic ballad "North Star," Bono said, "I thought it's okay to write a love song for the universe." He explained the much higher energy "Glastonbury" by saying that The Edge came up with a "big riff" influenced by (Led Zeppelin's) Jimmy Page. The singer also confirmed that the band has lots of new material ready to release, including the "Songs Of Ascent" album that was meant to compliment last year's "No Line On The Horizon." They've also recorded a rock album; a club-sounding album and the music from the upcoming Spider-Man musical on Broadway. Don't they ever sleep?

Gilmour/Orb

David Gilmour, the reclusive Pink Floyd guitar master renowned for his incredible tonalities, was so impressed by the U.K. ambient group The Orb when he worked with them last year on a cover of Graham Nash's "Chicago," that he ended up collaborating on a full album with the duo! Set for an October 12th release, "Metallic Spheres" will feature two songs divided into five movements each. A special laser light show created for the project will be shown in L.A. and New York in early October. Far out!

Les' Jams

Even before Les Paul's 90th birthday, the guitar legend would jam with his famous friends every Monday evening at New York's Iridium Jazz Club. Now, a year after his passing, 23 memorable moments from those sessions are about to be released on the new "Les Paul: Live in New York" DVD. Keith Richards, Steve Miller and Tony Bennett are among the featured artists playing with Les. A full 70 minutes of bonus footage and audio tracks will also be available for download starting tomorrow.

A Slowhand Doc

"The 1960s Review," a new documentary highlighting Eric Clapton's earliest work, will be out on October 19th. The DVD features rare and classic performance footage, seldom seen photos, archive interviews with Clapton and new contributions from his famous friends. The program focuses on the guitarist's formative years in the Sixties when he was working with The Yardbirds, Bluesbreakers, Cream, Blind Faith and more. You can learn more about it (and check out E.C.'s groovy clothes) at http://www.seeofsound.com/p.php?s=SIDVD559.

How Good Was It?

Have you ever wondered how good Led Zeppelin's 2007 reunion gig at London's O2 Arena actually was? While promoting his latest Band Of Joy solo project, Zep frontman Robert Plant was asked point blank about the reunion gig in an interview with England's "Telegraph." Without hesitation, the singer immediately said, "I had a really wonderful time. It was the best Led Zeppelin gig since 1975." But of course he doesn't think he would ever do it again. Wonder why they didn't ask him about releasing the reunion gig DVD?

A Fab Gift From Dick

Director Richard Lester has donated his early drafts of the scripts from The Beatles "A Hard Days Night" and "Help!" to the British Film Institute's National Archive. The never-before-seen scripts — along with a collection of photographs, letters and other documents — also confirm the films' original titles as "The Beatles" and "The Beatles II." Right so!

John's Loo

Here's your long awaited chance to own a toilet once used by John Lennon. The ornate toilet bowl from Lennon's Berkshire residence is heading to the auction blocks with an estimated value of $1,500. The porcelain "loo" is part of a sell-off of Beatles memorabilia at the 33rd Annual Beatles Convention in Liverpool next Saturday, August 28th. Also up for sale is a mono recording of "Two Virgins," Lennon's collaboration with his wife, Yoko Ono. Because there were a limited number of mono recordings of 1968's "Virgins," the item is expected to fetch about $3,900. Be warned that, even though the recording is in mono, the album cover still features full frontal photos of a naked John and Yoko. But not an ornate toilet bowl.

New Neil At Last

It's finally official. Neil Young's newest album, "Le Noise," will be released on CD, vinyl and iTunes on September 28th. But wait — there's more! In late November, it will also be available on Blu-Ray and as an iPhone and iPad app. Neil says, "The app will be free. It gives you an interactive album cover. Forgive my use of the word 'album.' I am old school." Neil and producer Daniel Lanois (who most famously has worked with U2) recorded the album in a Los Angeles mansion earlier this year, and Young previewed many of the tracks on his recent solo theater tour. This should be great!

Hot Town – Summer in the City

The intense heat will be with us for a few more days, so here's a warning. Children, older people and those engaged in heavy physical labor are most vulnerable to heat exhaustion or heat stroke. It's a lousy way to die.

Heat Exhaustion

Heat exhaustion is a less severe form of heat-related illness that occurs when the body is too hot. Symptoms include excessive thirst, profuse sweating, muscle cramps, dizziness, headache, nausea, vomiting, uncoordinated movement, fatigue and fainting. The skin usually feels cold and clammy to the touch. If left untreated, heat exhaustion can progress to heat stroke, a more serious condition that can be fatal.

Heat Stroke

Heat stroke is the most serious form of heat-related illness. Symptoms include dizziness, confusion, combativeness, strong rapid pulse, dry skin or lack of sweating and possible delirium, unconsciousness or coma. Onset can be rapid, with progression to a life-threatening state within minutes. With heat stroke, the mechanisms for cooling the body simply shut down. The victims stop sweating, so their skin is dry; the blood vessels that are normally close to the skin constrict, not allowing blood flow to the skin, so there's less cooling. Their temperature rises to over 104 degrees, which can cause brain damage that interferes with breathing and circulation.

Thirsty?

If you are thirsty, you're already dehydrated. So, drink on!

Timeliness Is Next To Godliness

No surprise that Guns N' Roses showed up two hours late for their 2002 Reading & Leeds Festival gig. But if they try that stunt again this weekend at the U.K. festival, the organizer won't let them go on! Melvin Benn says he has to be strict because the local councils of the surrounding English neighborhoods now have a strict curfew for music shows. But does Axl Rose understand the term "strict"?

Another New Song!

Try to think of any other recent band that dared to debut a new song in concert, must less four of them! Last Saturday in Helsinki, U2 played yet another new song live. This time the Irish band debuted "Every Breaking Wave." The song was intended to appear on the band's last album, "No Line On The Horizon," but will now be on their upcoming release, "Songs of Ascent." If they keep debuting a song or two every week, we'll hear their next three albums before the tour ends!

More New/Old Dylan

Bob Dylan will release the ninth volume in his "Bootleg" series on October 19th. The 48-track double album will feature the legendary, previously unreleased "Witmark Demos," recorded in the early Sixties for his music publishers. But wait — there's more! October 19th will also see the release of "Bob Dylan — The Original Mono Recordings." The mono box set, like "The Beatles In Mono" set released last year, is being issued because Dylan intended those early albums to be released in mono, which was the dominant medium at a time when stereo recording was still young. Among the classics in the mono set will be "The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan," "The Times They Are A-Changin'," "Another Side Of Bob Dylan," "Bringing It All Back Home," "Highway 61 Revisited," "Blonde On Blonde" and "John Wesley Harding."

Rock Meets Classic

No one around here seems to remember the 2010 version of the Rock Meets Classic tour, but the 2011 edition has just been announced to some fanfare. Deep Purple's Ian Gillan and former Foreigner singer Lou Gramm are the two biggest names of the rockers who will tour across Europe performing some of their biggest hits accompanied by the Bohemian Symphony Orchestra. The tour kicks off on January 5th in Germany, and no Stateside gigs are expected.

Stones' Top Beatles

"Rolling Stone" magazine is paying tribute to The Beatles with a special collector's edition listing the editor's choice of the band's "100 Greatest Songs." The 1967 McCartney/Lennon collaboration "A Day In the Life" topped the list. "I Want To Hold Your Hand," "Strawberry Fields Forever," "Yesterday" and "In My Life" round out the R.S. Top 5. The issue also features archive interviews with Paul McCartney and John Lennon and a profile of the late George Harrison's guitar work. In an introduction for the issue, Elvis Costello writes, "Lennon, McCartney and Harrison had stunningly high standards as writers. Then they started to really grow up: simple love lyrics to adult stories like 'Norwegian Wood,' which spoke of the sour side of love, and on to bigger ideas than you would expect to find in catchy pop lyrics." That discourse alone is almost worth the price of the magazine!

Jimi Tonight

"Jimi Hendrix Voodoo Child," a new two-hour documentary about guitar god Jimi Hendrix, will air tonight on the BIO Channel. To top it off, Parliament-Funkadelic bassist Bootsy Collins serves as Jimi's voice.

P.J.'s 20th

Pearl Jam is downplaying their 20th anniversary as a band. Guitarist Stone Gossard says that the closest thing they'll have to a celebration will be their performances at Neil Young's annual Bridge School Benefit. Gossard says, "It's perfect — not too blown up. It's not about us, it's about all those kids that are on stage with you and about Neil Young and his commitment, his influence." This will be P.J.'s eighth appearance at the benefit for the school that helps children with severe physical disabilities. And for the record, Pearl Jam played their first show on October 22nd, 1990 as Mookie Blaylock at Seattle's Off Ramp club. Young's 24th annual Bridge School Benefit concerts will take place in Mountain View, California on October 23rd and 24th. Rock on!

Lennon's Loo/Lotta Lucre

The auction at Saturday's 33rd Annual Beatles Convention in Liverpool saw the ornate blue & white toilet bowl from John Lennon's legendary Tittenhurst Park residence sell for almost $15,00010 times the pre-auction estimate! When Lennon had the porcelain lavatory replaced in 1970, he told the builders who took it away to "put some flowers in it or something." So builder John Hancock (his real name) kept it stored in a shed until he died 40 years later. The buyer was not identified, but sources said it was likely it was "going overseas." Thankfully they didn't say he was flush with cash.

Guns N' Roses were warned that if they took the stage late at Friday night's Reading Festival in England then they would be cut off due to local curfew laws. So, of course, the arrogant buggers came on an hour late, and, as promised, the event's organizers pulled the plug on the band at midnight. Perry added, "We don't know when we'll work again as a band. That part of it is up in the air, and it's starting to hit home." Not hard to see that, even for big time rock stars, sometimes putting up with too much drama just doesn't seem worth it.

Tribute To Bonzo

To mark the 30th anniversary of the passing of Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham on September 25th, a group of top notch drummers will be staging the "Bonzo: The Groove Remains the Same" tribute concert at the Key Club. Among the percussionists playing their favorite Zep songs will be Black Sabbath/Heaven & Hell's Vinnie Appice, The Scorpions' James Kottak, Manfred Mann's Earth Band/AC/DC's Chris Slade, Red Hot Chili Peppers/Chickenfoot's Chad Smith, Bonham's son Jason Bonham and many others. Rock on!

Greetings From Seattle

How good is the hard rocking Seattle band Big High? Good enough that Peter Buck of R.E.M. guested on their latest album. You'll love it when drummer Barrett Martin (of Screaming Trees fame) and the band kick off their set tonight at 8pm sharp at the Viper Room!
